It is customary for us Filipinos to show utmost respect towards our elders. They are the ones who have shown us love and care, making sure to attend to our needs as children, eventually providing us wisdom as we coast through life as grown individuals. In return, we make sure they are cared for and comfortable at all times, whether at home or while enjoying a day stroll.
With an advocacy of providing utmost comfort and convenience to the elderly, Araneta Center partnered with S.I.L.Y.A. Foundation to provide resting chairs as added amenities for the elderly patrons of the award-winning mall. In a turnover ceremony held on October 8, 2016, Gateway Mall accepted S.I.L.Y.A rocking chairs that will be available to the elderly at the Gateway Cineplex lobby.
The event is in line with the Elderly Filipino Week or Linggo ng Nakatatandang Pilipino. As mandated through Proclamation No. 470, the annual celebration emphasizes the important role older persons play in nation building.
S.I.L.Y.A. rocking chairs’ founder and social entrepreneur Tito Alcala was present at the event to formally turnover the rocking chairs. S.I.L.Y.A. or Sa Iyo Lolo at Lola Yantok aming Alay is the fulfillment of his personal advocacy of giving compassion to the elderly by addressing their special needs. He has provided rocking chairs to various establishments like shopping malls, airports, hotels, and restaurants for free. He shared that the idea stemmed from his own experience when he brought his octogenarian parents to the mall and noticed that public places lack comfortable resting places for the elderly. More importantly, it is also his way of expressing his gratitude to his parents.
